Does ChatGPT recommend my brand? How to check

How to check properly whether ChatGPT recommends your brand: which questions to ask, how many times, how to read the result, and what to do if you are missing.

Last updated:

Short answer

To see whether ChatGPT recommends your brand, ask it the questions your customers actually ask ("best …", "… vs …", "alternative to …") several times, and record for each answer whether your brand appears, in what position, and which sources the answer relies on. A single try is misleading: the same question can get a different answer at a different time.

Why one question is not enough

ChatGPT does not give the same answer to the same question every time. The model works with probabilities, and with web search on, the sources it reads can change. Seeing or not seeing your brand once shows that moment's luck, not the real picture.

Also, the question you type is not the one your customer types. Customers do not type brand names; they ask category questions such as "best accounting software for a small business". That is the question to measure.

Step by step

  • Write 10-20 questions customers ask in your category: a mix of recommendation, comparison and alternative questions.
  • Ask them without your brand name; the point is to see whether AI recommends you on its own.
  • Ask each question at least 2-3 times, on different days if you can.
  • For each answer note: is the brand mentioned, in what position, positive or negative, which competitors appear, which sites are cited.
  • Read the result as a rate: "mentioned in 25% of 20 questions".

How to read the result

If your mention rate is low while competitors appear often, the problem is usually the sources: competitors are in the comparison articles, lists and review sites AI reads, and you are not.

Look at the answers' source lists. The sites cited in answers that mention a competitor but not you are the places to get into.

What to do if you are missing

  • ChatGPT's web search uses the Bing index: make sure your site is indexed in Bing.
  • Write a clear answer page for each important question, with a short quotable answer in the first paragraph.
  • Get into the "best …" lists, review sites and directories of your category.
  • Fix wrong or outdated information: if AI quotes an old price or a retired feature, find the source and update it.

Frequently asked

Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my brand?

Most often because you are missing from the sources AI reads for your category (lists, comparisons, reviews). The model recommends brands that appear often in what it reads and was trained on.

Do I have to do this by hand?

No. Mavzena asks the same questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other assistants regularly, reads the answers and shows your mention rate, competitors and source gaps.
