GEO vs SEO: what's the difference and where to invest?
The difference between GEO (generative engine optimization) and SEO, how they feed each other, and how to split the budget.

Short answer
SEO is about ranking high on the search results page; GEO is about being mentioned and cited in AI answers such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. They are not rivals: AI search is largely fed by search engine indexes, so good SEO is the ground GEO stands on. The difference is in the outcome you measure and the content you prioritise.
The core difference: an answer, not a position
In SEO, success is your position among "ten blue links". In GEO the user often does not click a link at all; they read the one answer AI gives. If your name is not in that answer, your ranking means nothing to that user.
Side by side
- Target: SEO, the position on the results page; GEO, being named in the answer and listed among its sources.
- Measure: SEO, clicks, impressions, rank; GEO, mention rate, position in the answer, tone and share of citations.
- Source: SEO, Google's index; GEO, each assistant's own index (ChatGPT search uses Bing) plus the model's training data.
- Content: SEO, keyword-focused pages; GEO, pages that fully answer the question, quotable, sourced and current.
- Off-site: SEO, links; GEO, also being mentioned in lists, reviews, Wikipedia and communities.
How to split the budget
If your technical SEO (indexing, speed, structured data) has gaps, fix that first; AI cannot recommend what it cannot find. Then put part of the content budget into pages that directly answer the questions customers ask AI, and into presence on third-party sources.
Above all, measure: GEO work done without knowing where you are missing and which sources lift your competitor is guesswork.
Frequently asked
Can I stop doing SEO once I do GEO?
No. AI search mostly relies on search engine indexes; dropping SEO weakens GEO too.
Are AEO and GEO the same?
They overlap a lot. AEO (answer engine optimization) is the older term focused on answer boxes and voice assistants; GEO covers generative AI answers.
