How to show up in Google AI Overviews

What to do on content, structured data and freshness to be cited in Google's AI summaries (AI Overviews and AI Mode).

Last updated:

Short answer

Google AI Overviews builds its answer from pages in Google's own index, so good SEO comes first: your page must be indexed, fast and fully answer the question. On top of that, structured data (schema.org), a clear first paragraph, current content and concrete, citable facts raise your chance of being in the summary. The summary does not appear on every search; searches without one do not mean "not mentioned".

How AI Overviews works

On some searches Google places an AI-written summary above the results and shows the pages it relies on. AI Mode is a separate, conversational surface with longer answers. Both use pages from Google's index.

What to do

  • Answer the question in the page's first paragraph, in a form that can be quoted on its own.
  • Add structured data: Organization, Product or SoftwareApplication, FAQPage, Article.
  • Keep pages current and show the last-updated date; in one industry measurement content updated in the last 30 days got about 3.2× more citations (a single source; read with care).
  • Use concrete numbers, definitions and step-by-step lists; summaries quote such pieces easily.
  • Check the technical base: indexing, speed, mobile, and content readable without JavaScript.

How it is measured

There is no official API for Google AI Overviews; it is measured with third-party data providers that read the results page. Mavzena measures it through DataForSEO and counts searches without a summary separately: no summary means there is no answer to measure.

Frequently asked

Does AI Overviews appear on every search?

No. Google shows the summary only on some searches, and it varies by language and country.

Is structured data enough on its own?

No. It helps, but a page that answers the question well and is strong in the index matters more.
